Healthy Foods to Incorporate Into a Senior Diet

Healthy Foods to Incorporate Into a Senior Diet

The significance of eating healthily does not change one bit as you age. Though you can’t stop aging, you can surely stay healthy. Any caregiver with a senior patient would know how difficult it can be to prepare nutritious meals specifically for seniors. As their bodies are older, their bodily functions and needs are different from those of average adults. They need less trans fats, sodium, and added sugar as they gain weight easily, but they also need more nutrients for their immune system.

Here are some healthy foods for seniors according to eatright.org:

  • Fruits and vegetables
These may be fresh, frozen or canned. Go for dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli and orange vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes.
  • Varied protein sources
Include lean meats, fish, beans, and peas as protein in their diet.
  • Whole-grain bread, cereals, crackers, rice, or pasta every day
Have at least three ounces of these a day. Choose whole grains whenever possible.
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy
Have three servings of these in the form of milk, yogurt, or cheese as a source of vitamin D for their bones.
