Caregiving Tips: Stay in the Moment

Caregiving Tips: Stay in the Moment

Being in the moment is a useful skill to manage stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions while caregiving. When caregivers practice being in the moment, their bodies can get a break from the stress response of “fight or flight”.

There are plenty of non-medical care services in Indiana that give relief to caregivers who go through burnout. The following tips may also help caregivers reduce stress and cope with the range of emotions and experiences when caregiving.

  • Breathe.
Take more moments to pause and breathe. Focus on your belly or chest, then breathe in and breathe out. Try doing 3 breaths before answering the phone, while stopped at a red light in traffic, or before entering the front door.
  • Eat.
Take time to appreciate your food. Before eating, notice the smell, colors, and texture of the food on your plate. Have at least one meal a day in silence and without distractions.
  • Be Active.
When you take a jog or hike, be in full awareness. Notice the atmosphere, the colors of the leaves, or the surface you’re walking on. When doing your household chores, give your full attention to the task.
  • Routine.
Keep a routine, or not. Routines indeed keep you organized. However, if you feel like the routine is making your everyday tasks rigid and boring, it’s okay to make changes to break the automatic thinking.
  • Repeat.
It takes a lot of practice to bring focus to the moment. Repetition is the key to master this skill.
